Our neighbouring village of Thornton-le-dale with its meandering stream and picture post-card cottages is the depiction of a quintessential English village.  A firm favourite amongst locals and visitors, Thornton village delivers a good old-fashioned afternoon’s entertainment with little spends.  Visit the playground, paddle in the river, feed the ducks and follow the nature trail around the lake.  By the time you’re done you’ll be ready to indulge in an ice-cream or perhaps a scone in one of the pretty tea-rooms?  Or if you thirst for further adventure, travel up to the Dalby Forest to explore the woods and find the Gruffalo and his friends on the Gruffalo orienteering trail located at Adderstone Park.

As a small village, Thornton-le-dale, goes big when it comes to seasonal events.  If you are lucky enough to visit in late July then you can experience the Scarecrow Trail, an annual event with over 40 scarecrows taking part.  In August, the Thornton Show is one of the largest County shows and proves unmissable with not only traditional livestock entries but also exciting stunt and horse-jumping displays.  For vintage car-lovers, ‘Matthewsons’ auction-house, star of the TV series ‘Bangers and Cash’, also pulls a huge audience all year round.  For a little village, Thornton, like Pickering, certainly has a lot going on.
